Right in the heart of the continent, Munich is on many classic tourist and interrailing routes, easy to reach on the train from the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, France and Italy.

Major international cities that are within easy reach of Munich include Prague, Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg, Vienna, Zurich, Budapest, Nancy, Strasbourg, Bolzano and Venice. In fact, direct trains go to Munich’s hauptbahnhof (main train station) from all of them.

This means that visitors going on holiday to Munich can easily do so with a short rail journey, rather than going through the hassle of flying and getting to and from the airport.

There are many attractions in the Bavarian capital. These include Marienplatz (the old town square), New Town Hall (Rathaus) and the Viktualienmarkt, a great food market.

There are also plenty of museums, including the Stadtmuseum (City Museum) and the three major art galleries - Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek and Pinakothek der Moderne.

One of the major reasons that tourists will visit Munich by train is for the Bavarian beer halls, however. They’re great at the best of times, but during the Oktoberfest festival in October, they become one massive party zone full of revellers from around the world knocking back lots and lots of beer in tradtional large glasses.
