As rugby union fans buy up tickets for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup to be held in France this September and October, the players from major rugby-playing nations (such as New Zealand, England, France, Australia, Ireland and South Africa) may well have record-breaking on their mind. Here are some records that visitors travelling to the tournament may found broken in 2007. They include New Zealand’s record score against Japan, Australia’s record winning margin against Namibia, Gavin Hastings, Simon Culhane and Grant Fox’s point-scoring records and Jonah Lomu’s try-scoring records.

Most tries in a game/ match by a team: Australia scored 22 tries in their game vs Namibia in 2003, winning 142 – 0 in the end.
Most tries by a player, all time: Jonah Lomu (New Zealand) scored 15 tries in total during his two tournaments (1995 and 1999).
Most tries in a game/ match by a player: Marc Ellis scored 6 tries for New Zealand vs Japan in 1995.
Most tries in a tournament by a player: Jonah Lomu (New Zealand) scored 8 tries in the 1999 tournament.

Most points in a tournament by a player: Grant Fox (1987) scored 126 points for New Zealand

Only Australia have won the tournament more than once (1991, 1999). Only England (2003), South Africa (1995) and New Zealand (1987) can equal this record by winning the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.
